WID GTB Chapter raised nearly $3,000 at its Inaugural Fundraiser Event, “Boots, Brews and BBQ” on October 27, 2016. The event, held at 81 Bay Brewing Company, and catered by Mission BBQ, was attended by more than 80 local defense industry professionals and active duty military. “We are thrilled with the outcome of our first scholarship fundraising event and wish to thank the local Tampa Bay defense community for their support,” stated Sally Woodward, WID GTB’s Scholarship Director, and a partner with Shutts & Bowen LLP. “With the proceeds from this event, WID GTB will fund scholarships for local young women desiring to pursue a degree in a STEM field.” Proceeds were raised through three (3) silent auction items, which included a mini-vacation and a self-indulgence package. There were also five (5) raffle drawings and cash donations. Mission BBQ donated all food for the event, Shutts provided the entertainment, and 81 Bay contributed a Growler, refillable by the recipient from current 81Bay brews. The Chapter is planning to host a similar event next year. “One of the primary goals of our chapter is to encourage the pursuit of careers in support of STEM, national defense and national security,” explains Janel Brown, WID GTB’s President. “This event provides a great way for our Chapter and the community to ensure we meet our mission.”
During our May Luncheon Program, GTB WID held a clothing drive to support the Military Support Organization (MSO). Part of MSO’s mission is to help transition veterans in the Tampa Bay region by finding interview appropriate clothing for homeless veterans. We are proud to announce GTB WID members donated more than $2,600 in clothing for female veterans – helping our veteran ladies dress for competitive job interviews. Thank you to our members!
The Greater Tampa Bay Women in Defense (WID), National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), Global SOF Foundation (GSOF) and Florida Defense Contractors Association (FDCA) joined together for a holiday party last December to raise funds for the Southeastern Guide Dogs Paws for Patriots Program. This program pairs highly trained guide dogs with visually impaired veterans; exceptional service dogs with veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; well-behaved emotional support dogs with veterans for companionship and emotional support in the home; and calming therapy dogs working in military healthcare facilities. Recently, Veteran Kyle Lundy sent a note to thank us for his service dog, Star. Kyle says that over the past year, Star has transformed his life. He wraps up his note with this: “Star is the single best thing that has ever happened to me. I can honestly say if it wasn’t for Star, I wouldn’t be here right now. I was at my breaking point and ready to end it when Star came into my life. Her wacky, lovable, dependable self has turned my life around.” We are pleased to support such a fantastic organization and thank our members for thier generosity and continued support of the organization.
