Update on Our Chapter’s Support to Young Women in STEM

The Greater Tampa Bay Chapter of Women In Defense (WID GTB) was pleased to join the Tampa Bay STEM Network, Hillsborough County Public Schools, The Florida Aquarium, MOSI, and the Hillsborough Education Foundation to support Mission Tampa Bay. This 3-day event, which started February 16, 2019, allowed young women to learn and put to work essential skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as they built remote operating vehicles (ROVs) and operated them in Tampa Bay.

As Hospitality Sponsor, WID GTB provided refreshments throughout the event to help the participants stay focused during the long weekend. After the immersive experience, the participants took the ROVs back to their schools and facilitated additional projects and experiments with their peers. This additional activity gave the participants an opportunity to practice leadership and team-building skills as well as expand their confidence in STEM.

WID GTB is dedicated to supporting this and other opportunities to encourage young women to get involved and stay involved in STEM. Initiatives such as Mission Tampa Bay empower young female students to express themselves through fun and innovative projects with the goal to peak their interest in STEM and raise up the next generation of female science and engineering leaders.
