WID ScholAR PROGRAM

Through the WID Scholar program, Women In Defense encourages women to pursue careers supporting U.S. national security with a focus on defense or foreign policy.

Since its establishment in 1988, the WID Scholar program, previously HORIZONS, has awarded more than $1,000,000 to more than 200 recipients pursuing degrees ranging from law to engineering to math to public policy. Awards are based on academic achievement, participation in defense and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of interest, recommendations, and financial need. Recipients must report periodically on the impact of the awards on their personal and professional lives.

The National Defense Industrial Association, Women In Defense, and their sponsors are proud to invest in high-performing women to increase diversity and innovation in government, academia, and the defense industrial workforce.

Supporting Young Women in STEM

The demand for skilled workers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is closely linked to global competitiveness. While the United States has many talented scientists, engineers and mathematicians, not enough students are graduating with STEM backgrounds to fill the open positions in the marketplace.

The Greater Tampa Bay Chapter of Women In Defense (WID GTB) off its STEM initiative in 2016, engaging with local schools and organizations to encourage and inspire young women to pursue STEM careers.

Support the Greater Tampa Bay Chapter of Women in Defense STEM scholarship program! Through this program, we support efforts within our local STEM community to raise awareness and interest in STEM among female K-12 students by providing opportunities to explore STEM concepts through hands on activities. Since its inception, our STEM program has provided more than 60 scholarships and support for these young women to attend in person and virtual events such as STEM summer camps, the John Glenn Academy, Tampa Roboticon, Villa Madonna, Girls Scouts of America, Girls Inc. and Mission Tampa Bay and Tampa Bay STEM Network. Your support will directly impact our STEM awareness efforts in our local community!
